Why Reno: Summer Events

Client Connection

Still looking to fill in some holes in your summer plans? Check out the Reno area as the summer heats up with a full calendar of events for everyone.

One of the few cities that dedicates an entire month to the Arts, Reno in July becomes Artown with over 500 events from July 1st through the 31st. From musical to cultural events, click on the link to check out what sounds most interesting to you. Many of the events are free.

Celebrating its 100th Anniversary, the Reno Rodeo returns to town June 20th through the 29th. Billed as the ‘Wildest, richest rodeo in the west,’ this event has become a staple for families from all over. Not only are there daily rodeo events, there’s also the fairgrounds with rides, games and fair food you don’t see every day!

Want to take in a PGA tour event while walking amongst the tall pines of the Sierra Foothills? Montreaux Golf & Country Club once again hosts the Barracuda Championship from July 22nd to the 29th. With great weather and high mountain air, it’s the perfect outing for friends and family to enjoy a day or 3. If your game is up to it, consider participating in the Pro/Am events that pair you with a PGA pro. Click on the link to check out the schedule of events, as these days, it’s more than just golf!

For the classic car and music enthusiast in all of us, you can’t beat Hot August Nights to celebrate the cars and sounds of decades past. With events held throughout Reno, Sparks, and Virginia City that combine displays, music, food and drink, this is one of the hottest events of the year. With this year’s event running from August 2nd-11th, there’s even time to register your own classic vehicle! This year’s entertainment includes The Little River Band, Pablo Cruise and, on Friday night, the Temptations.

“I feel the need, for speed.” Need a little more horsepower after Hot August Nights? Look to the sky, as the Reno Air Races will have your eyes glued toward the heavens as the races take off September 11th-19th. From biplanes to military jets, featuring races, aerobatics and a large static display, you can easily spend a whole day, if not more, walking the general area or pits for an up-close-and-personal with man and machine.

This is just a sample of a summer full of events throughout the area. These happen every year here and are another reason why Reno is not only a great place to visit, but to live. For more events, check out Visit Reno/Tahoe.

Eating for Optimal Nutrition as an Older Adult

In the past few years, Tufts’ Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging released updated dietary guidelines for older adults. They note that, after age 50, caloric needs decrease to 2,000 for men and 1,600 for women. However, vitamin and mineral needs actually increase or stay the same. It may be challenging to keep up your nutrients on limited calories, so MyPlate for Older Adults created a loose template to help adults over 50 eat the necessary foods to achieve this goal.

China's Municipal Debt Challenge

As we have discussed in our other blog topics focused on China, the GDP numbers, total outstanding debt, and other various statistics reported by their government have been questioned and scrutinized over the years. While most analysts put China’s debt/GDP near 250%, The Institute of International Finance (IIF) actually believes that China’s debt load was possibly as high as 300% in 2017. Today, we expect that to be much higher.
