Low-Maintenance Plants that Improve Your Health

Health & Fitness

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)1, on average, Americans spend 90 percent of their time indoors, where the concentrations of some pollutants are often two to five times higher than those outside. Plants can absorb and eliminate up to 87% of air toxins in 24 hours2 in addition to releasing oxygen. Some studies have shown that plants can improve concentration and productivity, reduce stress levels, and boost your mood3.

If you are new to gardening or do not have a green thumb, there are plenty of low-maintenance indoor plants that you can use in your home and office. Below is a list of some indoor plants that may help boost your health4:

  • Cacti & succulents. They tend to like bright light but require little water and upkeep. It is a good idea to research specific plants to understand their humidity and soil requirements.
  • Aloe plants. Aloe does best with a lot of sun. They help reduce cleaning product chemicals found in the air.
  • Rubber trees. Rubber trees are easy to take care of and they do well in dim light. They remove formaldehyde from the air.
  • Peace lilies. They do well in shade and cooler temperatures. These flowering plants filter out benzene, formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, xylene, toluene and ammonia from the air.
  • Snake plants. Snake plants make a great addition to your bedroom. They absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen during the night, which can help improve your sleep. These plants require little light and water to survive.
