Why Reno: Hiking Trails

Why Reno: Hiking Trails

Client Connection

Mark Twain once said, “Golf is a good walk spoiled”. We like to say a hike is a good walk elevated.

Living in Reno affords us an almost endless supply of hiking trails, as we live at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, with thousands of miles of hiking trails in our area alone. Whether hiking part of the 2,653 mile Pacific Crest Trail, the 165 mile-long Tahoe Rim Trail, or the 3 mile Picnic Rock Viewpoint Trail that provides a dramatic view of Lake Tahoe, there is something for every fitness level.

One of the easier hikes close to town, the Snowflower Peak hike is accessed off the Thomas Creek Trail at the base of the Sierra Nevadas. Though the entire hike is close to 18 miles, most people are content with the 4 mile beginning hike that takes you along Thomas Creek. This hike is especially alluring in the fall, as the quaking aspens put on a colorful show. One of the best and easiest fall color hikes in our area! It’s also a great hike for our furry friends to frolic in the creek.

An area favorite due to its incredible 360 degree view from the top is the Mount Rose Trail. At roughly 11 miles round trip, it’s a fairly moderate hike that is well maintained and well-traveled. You’ll hike through numerous landscape and temperature changes, ending at its stark peak with incredible views. Even in July, there is snow to be found up there, so pack a windbreaker or sweatshirt, as it tends to be windy and considerably cooler at elevation. Click here to get current conditions from hikers, as of this writing (6/25/19), the upper trail is still snow covered.

For those looking for a more challenging ascent, Castle Peak Trail, though only 6 miles out and back, the last part is a steep, rocky climb to the top. Though difficult, the reward at the end is worth it: a 360 degree view of the surrounding mountains, lakes, and wildflowers.

Want to see waterfalls, multiple alpine lakes as well as great views of Lake Tahoe?  Check out the Eagle Lake Trail overlooking Emerald Bay near South Lake Tahoe. The hike to the waterfall is fairly easy, the one to the lake is moderate to difficult. Though steep and rocky along the way, the hike to the lake is worth the treat at the end, with great views of Eagle Lake, Emerald Bay, and the southern end of Lake Tahoe. You can also continue the hike to additional alpine lakes further up. If you choose to hike to Eagle Lake, you must get a wilderness permit at the trail head.

This is but a small sampling of the incredible trails in the Reno/Tahoe area. Sites like www.alltrails.com are an excellent resource for finding trails that fit your needs (fitness, kids, dog-friendly). Whatever your fitness level, you’ll elevate your spirit in the beauty of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Enjoy!
