Cybersecurity

In this day and age, it’s common to have a phone, a computer, a tablet, an iPod, and more digital devices that leave users susceptible to cybercrime. There is a lot you and your family can do to protect yourselves, so it’s important to discuss what measures you can take every now and then. With school starting back up, now is a perfect time to refresh. Here are a few things you can start with:

• Keep the family computer in the open to keep your children accountable for what sites they visit, and so you can stay abreast of any cyberbullying activity.

• Set rules with your children so they are aware of what kinds of websites they may access.

• Teach your children about the dangers of using the internet such as predators and cybercrime. Make sure they don’t give out personal information or tell anyone they’re home alone, etc.

• Implement parental controls as needed to ensure your children do not access things they shouldn’t.

• If you’re worried your own files may accidently get deleted/compromised, create separate user logins for your children.

• Monitor your kids’ activity, including websites visited, emails, and text messages. You may feel this encroaches on their privacy, but you can establish an understanding with them that you will be doing this for their safety.

• Teach your children to never respond to calls, texts, emails, social media friend requests, etc., from people they don’t know.

• Make sure all family members have strict privacy settings on social media so strangers can’t view their photos or profile information.

These are just a few tips to help keep your household cybercrime-safe. Visit the resources below for more in-depth information on what actions you and your family can take.

Earthquake Insurance

The decision to carry earthquake insurance is purely personal and, oftentimes, is not an easy choice. Earthquake insurance is generally not included in your homeowners insurance policy, so it should be purchased as a separate policy or as an endorsement to your homeowners policy.
