Traveling with Your Pet

Travel

Do you miss your dog when you go on vacation? You don’t have to, you know. Bringing pets along on family vacation is increasingly common. It just takes a little planning and your furry friend can join in on the fun, too! Here are some considerations to keep in mind while planning your next “full” family vacation:

Size: if your pet is small enough, many airlines will allow you to bring it on the flight with you. Larger pets usually need to go in the cargo storage area.

Itinerary: use a website like bringfido.com to find hotels, restaurants, and other fun spots that accept pets to help make planning a breeze.

Transportation: if you are renting a car at your destination, be sure to contact the rental agency beforehand to confirm your pet is allowed, which may require a small additional fee.

Vet: check with your pet’s vet to ensure it has all shots required for your destination as well as potential travel stress medications needed.

Carrier: you can find an airline-approved carrier at most pet stores if you don’t have one. Be sure to familiarize your pet with the carrier before the trip to reduce stress, and add plenty of padding for comfort.

Packing: don’t forget to pack a bag for your pet! Include food, water, medications, and their favorite toy(s) for comfort.

Insurance: even without a pet, travel insurance is a good idea; especially for bigger and more expensive trips. If you incur any delays or issues, a travel agent can help reorganize your plans keeping your pet in mind.
