Tips for Avoiding Digital Threats

Cybersecurity

A cyber attack targets computer information systems, infrastructures, computer networks, or personal devices. In today’s connected world, we are all at risk for cyber attacks, so it is important to take steps to reduce your risk. Below are a few tips to help protect yourself:

1. Update frequently. Set software to automatically download security updates from trusted parties. When your device advises you that there is a software update, do it right away rather than delaying it.

2. Protect passwords. Don’t use the same password across multiple websites. Consider using a password management company such as LastPass, 1Password, KeePass, or Dashlane to generate unique passwords that are more than 20 characters long. Use two-factor authentication whenever possible.

3. Download cautiously. Only download software from trusted parties. Be highly skeptical of third-party sites offering free software. Pay attention to the permissions you enable within apps.

4. Limit access. Do most of your work and browsing using a separate user account and only log in as your computer’s administrator to perform administrative tasks.

5. Turn it off. Turn off your computer or your Wi-Fi connection when you are not using it. Additionally, disable services and connections, such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, on your smartphone when you are not using them.

6. Encrypt. Use a virtual private network (VPN) when using public Wi-Fi, and use password protection on your smartphone and other devices.
