Cybersecurity

You feel like you read these tips all the time, but there’s a reason these top tips are pushed so hard: they help protect you! A refresher never hurts, so read on to make sure you’re handling the basics when it comes to your personal security:

  • Be aware of suspicious phone calls, emails, and texts asking you to send money or disclose personal information.
  • Do not open links or attachments from anyone you are not familiar with. Also, be careful with links and attachments that may appear to be from someone you are familiar with (always double check the email address).
  • If you receive an email requesting personal information, look closely at the email address and not just the “From” name. Phishing emails will attempt to use a “From” name that you recognize, but when you look at the email address, you may notice it is not legitimate. Or when you click reply to the email, you may notice a different address appears in the “To” field.
  • Beware of phishing and malicious links. Urgent-sounding, legitimate-looking emails are intended to tempt you into accidentally disclosing personal information or installing malware.
  • Use strong passwords (on computer, phone, tablet, etc.) and two-factor authentication when available. Do not use security questions that are easily located online.
  • Do not click on pop-up ads. If you are interested in an ad you see, search for the product in your browser instead of clicking through the ad.

Making Your New Year’s Resolutions Stick

It is important to remember that the New Year isn’t meant to serve as a catalyst for sweeping character changes. It’s a time for people to reflect on their past years’ behavior and promise to make positive lifestyle changes. Setting small, attainable goals throughout the year, instead of a singular, overwhelming goal on January 1, can help you reach whatever it is you strive for.
