An Introvert’s Guide to Surviving the Holidays

Psychological Space

‘Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house, not a creature was stirring… it was an introvert’s dream come true. Introverts, or those with introverted tendencies, tend to get their energy from spending time alone. That isn’t to say they dislike spending time with others — it just means that, after a social event, an introvert may feel the need for alone time to recharge. This blog post is intended to provide introverts with a few tips to stay energized through the holiday season.

Schedule some you-time. With shopping, gift exchanges, family gatherings, and holiday parties popping up left and right, it is important to remember to make time for yourself. Make sure that you dedicate at least a few minutes each day to doing something you enjoy such as reading, relaxing, or going for a solo walk.

Spend time with your pet. Pets are a great excuse to stop socializing for a bit. Studies have found that our furry friends can help lower stress and improve our psychological well-being. So take a moment to show your pet some extra love this holiday season.

Take social breaks. Sometimes it can be helpful to take a break during a holiday gathering. Sneak off to your room or a quiet space during your family get-together and recharge. A few minutes of alone time can help boost your energy to get you through the evening of socializing.

Relax before and after your holiday events. If you know you are about to go on a trip where you will have little to no alone time, take a day or two before your trip to spend time preparing. Rather than trying to fit in last minute appointments, spend some quality time with yourself. Also, be sure to detox and recharge after your trip.

Ask questions. During holiday events, you may find it helpful to be the one asking great questions and listening to what others have to say. This way, you aren’t obligated to do all the talking.

Get some sleep. Make sure to get some quality Z’s during the holidays. Running from event to event and socializing with so many people can be exhausting. Keep your mind and your immune system healthy by getting enough sleep to get you through your busy days.

What We’re Reading: Intellectual and Physical Capital

Our commitment to education and our Four Capital Approach is evident through SFG’s Book Club. This fun tradition reinforces our Intellectual Capital. Team members choose non-fiction books to read and, twice a year, we get together as a team and present our “book reports”. We thought we’d share some of the books we’ve been reading related to the Physical and Intellectual Capitals in case any of them pique your interest.

Dispose of Your Electronics, Protect Your Data

When your electronics get old or you upgrade, your first instinct might be to get rid of the old right away. But first, you should ensure no data is left on the device in case it ends up in the wrong hands. You would think you can just delete the data, but it’s not always that simple, as sometimes the data remains on your device unless you take additional steps to permanently delete it.
