Measuring Health Beyond Quantitative Values

Measuring Health Beyond Quantitative Values

Health & Fitness

We tend to measure health in ways that are quantifiable: the number of miles we run, calories consumed, days per week we go to the gym, hours we sleep, etc. One of the most essential components of wellness is something that’s trickier to calculate: how joyful you feel.

Happiness and good health are linked. A 2008 study showed that people who were happy on the day their hearts were tested had a healthier pattern of heart rate variability. Other studies show that a sense of well-being can boost our immune system, make our hearts healthier, and maybe even add years to our lives. Do you know a grumpy person who always seems to be getting sick? That may not be a coincidence — research is now also finding a link between happiness and a stronger immune system.

Unfortunately, carving out time to do the things that make you happy is not always easy. We manage to do everything needed for our families, jobs, friends, and community, but often forget to take care of ourselves. We all have little things that bring us joy such as going for walks, meditating, and visiting with close friends. It is important to schedule time for yourself to do these and other activities that make you happy. After all, happiness may be the key to a healthier life.

Earthquake Insurance

The decision to carry earthquake insurance is purely personal and, oftentimes, is not an easy choice. Earthquake insurance is generally not included in your homeowners insurance policy, so it should be purchased as a separate policy or as an endorsement to your homeowners policy.
